So what are the claimed health benefits of camel milk and what science underpins those claims?
When we founded CameLife, our vision was to become Australia’s leading advocates and experts on camel milk. By staying out of the primary production chain, we could focus on the science and health benefits of camel milk.
We have been busy curating research papers, articles and content on camel’s milk, with a view to publishing a scientific paper which baselines the knowledge and identifies key areas for research in Australia. Over the next few months, we intend to build out our Camel Milk Science page as we gain and curate knowledge. We’d love your contributions!
We have found a large body of anecdotal evidence of camel’s milk being used to treat conditions ranging from autism, cancers, burns, diabetes and more. There is also a wealth of genuine peer reviewed scientific papers that support the anecdotal evidence, but little is coordinated and collated into a body of knowledge.
Very little (none?) of the scientific evidence originates in Australia or has been reviewed here. Similarly, the anecdotal evidence is largely overseas, particularly in the United States. Australia’s contribution seems to be the cynical award of a Choice Magazine Shonky Award to a small business that had the temerity to publish some of the claims that are being researched overseas!
We are therefore a long way from being able to make therapeutic claims for camel milk products in Australia. We want to change that; we believe that Australia should be a global centre for camel’s milk science and knowledge.
Meantime, its just milk!
We have been busy collating information, which we sometimes post to help build awareness. Along the way, we came across the work of Barry Smeltzer and his Healing Provisions practice. His practice, Healing Provisions is an Austin, Texas based Holistic Medical Clinic dedicated to children, adults and families on the quest to heal and find optimal health. Barry is the owner, a Holistic Practitioner and a passionate advocate for camel’s milk .
Here in full is Barry giving a lecture on The Science of Camel Milk; its a great overview of the health benefits of camel milk and the science behind them. It’s a bit of a primer, but thats good.

Have you've ever cut an apple in half and wondered why it goes brown so quickly? Well, you're watching oxidative stress at work. You are seeing a chain reaction of free radicals that causes stress on the apples cells which it cannot defend.
Free radials are the enemy of healthy skin. Free radicals are unstable atoms that can damage cells, accelerating ageing and causing illnesses. But all is not lost; a healthy diet, plenty of water and good quality anti-oxidant skincare products can arrest and even reverse free radical damage.
